Dorris: These are a few of my favorite things; Published in the Daily Camera, January 21, 2005 • Being a student, I'm pretty much perpetually broke. So when Jack Kerner, one of the owners of the 14th St. Bar and Grill, 1400 Pearl St., let me know about the restaurant's Social Hour from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, I put my running shoes on and planted myself at a table in the small and cozy restaurant. First things first — if you haven't been there like I hadn't, make sure and get a table by the windows. You get to look out onto Pearl Street for what might be the best people-watching in town, which only gets more and more fun as you knock back the wine. Wine, you ask? Yes, wine. One of the Social Hour deals is that a bottomless glass of wine is only $5 — you can choose between a chardonnay and a merlot, and the merlot tastes a lot better than the normal house wine that is served in other bars. Other drink specials? You can get a draft beer (Twisted Pine Pale Ale, New Belgium Biere de Mars and Avery New World Porter) for $3, and IZZE-and-vodka drinks (lemon, grapefruit, blueberry, and blackberry flavors) for $3.50. The only catch to get these deals is that you have to order from the food menu — but all the food is only $5 an item. And by `an item` I don't mean a set of three cheese sticks: You can get an entire basil and roma tomato pizza (which my friend loved) or a half-pound cheeseburger and fries. Folks, this is the best burger to be had in Boulder, hands down. They actually smoke the meat over a big ol' open grill, and it's unbelievably tasty. Get it. Other tasty treats for just $5? Try the mussels — you get a ton and they're steamed with tomatoes, capers, basil, hot red peppers, garlic and white wine. Or mix it up with the won ton shrimp, which are served with drizzles of wasabi aioli. Call (303) 444-5854 for more information.
